In this episode, Dr. Burritt interviews Peter Crist M.D., president of the ACO. Dr. Crist, an observer by nature, emphasizes the importance of distinguishing observations from conclusions and highlights this simple yet profound distinction as part of the foundation of functional thinking. He explains that part of what drew him to Wilhelm Reich’s work and orgonomy is the method of functional thinking which requires one to stand one’s own feelings and allow conclusions to come to the observer rather than jump to preconceptions and biases.

The ACO’s Case Presentation Series, A Different Kind of Psychiatry, continues with a free webinar on Saturday, April 17, 2021 from 4:00PM to 5:00PM (EDT). Salvatore Iacobello, M.D. will present, “ A College Student Faces Depression in the Age of Social Distancing“ in a discussion with host/interviewer Chris Burritt, D.O. Following their conversation, you will have the opportunity to ask questions by on-line chat.
Dr. Iacobello, why did you choose to present this case?
Dr. Iacobello: This particular case is interesting for a variety of reasons: Andrew, a young college student, was overwhelmed and scared when he reached out to me. He was having panic attacks, fleeting suicidal thoughts and feelings of hopelessness.
These circumstances are relevant to the present situation created by the COVID-19 pandemic. Social isolation has had a profound impact on the mental health of individuals, many consequences of which are still yet to be seen. Young people have been affected particularly hard, as we can see by the documented increase in substance abuse, overdoses and suicide attempts.
Other elements that make this case compelling are Andrew’s age and the fact that he was alone while coping with a tragic loss. Additionally, I never met Andrew in person and treated him exclusively by telehealth—another element making this case special— which made for a unique doctor/patient experience.
What treatment approach did you use with this patient?
Dr. Iacobello: I used psychotherapy and focused on being supportive, allowing Andrew to freely express his thoughts and feelings. My interventions were based on my understanding of his character structure and what I was able to discern about his biophysical structure, including his muscular armor. My being able to see and understand these aspects of Andrew helped me provide him with effective strategies to avoid a return into withdrawal and despair.
What do you hope people will learn from your presentation?
Dr. Iacobello: I hope that I can help participants understand that even with the limitations of tele-medicine, therapy can still be beneficial, especially if one is trained in the various aspects of medical orgone therapy.
