ich selbst habe diese Beobachtung in Norddeutschland nicht gemacht, habe das aber wahrgenommen, wenn ich richtig weit nach Norden (Finnland) gefahren bin.

Ich habe erst vor kurzen die für mich seltsame Nachricht gehört, dass die Araber ihre Wüste lieben und viele sauer darüber sind, dass Bäume angepflanzt werden. Für sie ist die Wüste etwas heimisches, mit Bäumen können sie nichts anfangen – höchstens als Brennholz.

Die Plastizität des Himmels: der Unterschied fällt mir immer auf, wenn ich vom Rheintal in die Eifel fahre. Der Himmel wird blauer (statt milchig), die Wolken stärker abgegrenzt (statt diffus) und das Atmen der Luftz fällt auf einmal so leicht (statt wie gegen einen Widerstand).
Frankreich im Herbst: in jedem kleinen Gebüsch knallt es – man wundert sich, das da noch ein Jäger reinpasst! Im Sommer ist mir in Frankreich und in Italien die fast totale Abwesenheit von Singvögeln aufgefallen – eine drückende Stille. Und noch etwas: sämtliche Gartenabfälle werden verbrannt. Irgendetwas wieder zu Erde werden zu lassen scheint verpönt. So wird der Humus immer weniger – die Erde stirbt und wird zu unlebendigem Staub. Hausmüll wrd im knochentrockenen Kiefernwald verbrannt – ob dadurch die ganze Gegend in Flammen aufgeht, scheint nicht weiter wichtig zu sein. Selbst auf den städtischen Mülldeponien wird der Müll unkontrolliert verbrannt, Abwässer werden ungeklärt ins Meer geleitet, direkt neben dem Badestrand -und das in Orten, wo man Kurtaxe bezahlen muss! Ausserdem angeln die Einheimischen gerne in der Abwasserfahne von Atomkraftwerken. Insgesamt ist Deutschland immer noch anders …
„Bäume sind natürliche Cloudbuster“ – das ist wirklich wichtig, wir können kaum genug Bäume haben. Vor allem tiefwurzelnde Bäume, die eine Verbindung zum Grundwasser herstellen, erfüllen eine Cloudbuster-Funktion.

In England there were thick forests until 400 years ago, when much of it was cut to raise sheep for wool because the textile industry in Flanders would buy as much wool as could be raised. The rest was cut 200 years ago at the start of the Industrial Revolution to starve the peasants to force them to go to work in the mills because there were too many free foods like acorns in the forest. The forests in the Fens was destroyed to prevent outlaws from hiding there. Today, almost all of England is used for sheep farming. The only real forest remaining is the Forest Of Dean, which was never cut because it was a Royal hunting preserve for 700 years. In Scotland, less than 1% of the original Caladonian Pine remains; the rest was cleared for raising sheep by English landowners.
In Scananavia, where there has been a law requiring that every tree cut must be replanted for over 400 years, there are large numbers of trees, but hardly any rewal old growth forests with their natural mix of trees of different species, different ages, understory vegetation, fallen trees being recyclewd back into the ground to give nutrients to future generations of trees, etc. There are only trees, nothing but a tree farm, not a real forest community of species. Germany and Austria look like they have forests, and many people there think they have fortests, but they are not real, living forest communities of species, only tree planatations because of that same sort of laws. A tree farm is nothing like a forest in it’s biological functioning. The only real forest in all of Europe is the Bieloweazia Forest in Poland, and they idiots are still cutting it!
In America, the only developed country where wood is still used on a large scale as a building material, the Forest Service is the most corrupt agency in the government, and District Rangers usually go to work for the lumber industry as soon as they retire from government service. University departments of forestry get most of their grant money from lumber companies, so academics keep „discovering“ that logging is good for the forests. More than 90% of the forests that existed in 1947, when the Forest Service was given a mandate from Congress to cut as many trees as possible, has been cut.
All over Latin America they are cutting forests and replanting tree farms of eucalyptus which is inedible to anything that did not evolve in Australia, is toxic to insects and birds that eat those insects, and drinks the underground water table down to below the level that other plants can reach so everything else around it dies. Also, a lot of forest in South America has been cleared for cattle ranching, but nearly as much has been cleared for growing soybeans so vegetarians can feel they are helping the environment by not eating meat. Brazil also has a government mandate to use only renewable sources of motor fuel, so large areas are being cleared to grow crops to be converted into biodeisel to be burned in cars.
In Chile, when an American billionaire wanted to donate land to establish a National Park to protect a large area of forest, the Catholic Church refused to sell him a vital part of the land he needed because he had also contributed to an organization that taught birth control.
Humans are a species of desert-makers like beavers are a species of dam-builders. Beavers cannot tolerate seeing running water; they have an instinct to build a dam to stop it from moving. Humans feel threatened by forests and must clear the forest to feel safe. At some deep psychological level, humans are afraid of the forest and can only tolerate open spaces with a few scattered trees as in a park or suburb. Deep forests scare them.
