Interesting. Perhaps one could say that the defensiveness and avoidance of the essential somehow is all based on anxiety; which seems like quite an obvious conclusion. Considering what happened to Reich on the one hand; and on the other hand the “streaming anxiety“ or “pleasure anxiety” his formulations cause all of us; avoidance of the essential or a fearful, defensive or paranoid attitude seems perhaps inevitable. I do think that the more one has had the opportunity to grapple with that fear and learn to tolerate the excitation that generates the fear, the less one is “shadowboxing” with the anxiety that generates the avoidance and the defensiveness.

I understand you and agree with you, but Laska meant something other than the autonomic streaming, the orgasm theory, the orgone, etc. Even if all of Reich’s scientific theories were definitively refuted, there remains something that he alone advocated in the 20th century, just as Stirner did in the 19th century and LaMettrie in the 18th century. Laska sought to pinpoint this specific aspect that made each of the three intellectual outcasts. As Reich wrote in The Function of the Orgasm: “Nothing aroused as much hatred, as much malicious hostility, and as much fear of death as the claim that the living possess the ability to self-regulate.”
