The ACO’s Case Presentation Series, A Different Kind of Psychiatry, continues with a free webinar on Saturday, January 31, 2026, from 11:00AM to 12:00PM (ET). Dee Apple, Ph.D. will present “The Legalization of Marijuana: What Parents and Teens Need to Know” in a discussion with interviewer/host Susan Marcel, D.O.

During this presentation, you will have the opportunity to submit questions privately using the Q and A function on Zoom. Questions will be addressed during the Q and A portion of the webinar. As an attendee you will not be seen or heard on screen, and you can choose to submit a question anonymously.

Why did you choose to present this case?

Dr. Apple: I have known my patient Jon since he was a teenage college student struggling with marijuana abuse. At 29-years-old, Jon has made much progress and yet continues to struggle to stay sober from marijuana, returning to it during acute periods of anxiety even after months or years of sobriety. Jon is a remarkable and talented young man, and it is personally and professionally aggravating to see—and important to understand and learn from—the struggles and missteps he has had in finding his way. He’s a good example of what can happen to the best of our youth in the current legalized, liberalized and confusing climate around THC.

What treatment method do you use?

Dr. Apple: I utilize character analytically informed psychotherapy. I pay attention to the patient’s emotional expressions and rigidities as well as their ability to make or develop more accurate perceptual contact with themselves and with others. While I pay attention to the patient’s current symptoms, they are not the main focus. I look for the underlying characteristic ways the patient addresses difficulties and anxieties in their life, which results in their creating the symptoms that trouble them.

What do you hope people will learn from your presentation?

Dr. Apple: I hope to educate parents and teens by demonstrating marijuana’s impact on the developing adolescent’s brain and how it interferes with healthy emotional and social expression. They will learn that marijuana or THC in any form is in fact not a harmless plant, but, has serious destructive effects on health and development. We will encourage an open, factual dialogue about the risks and consequences of its use.
