The ACO’s Case Presentation Series, A Different Kind of Psychiatry, continues with a free webinar on Saturday, March 13, 2021 from 4:00PM to 5:00PM (EDT). Edward Chastka, M.D. will present, „Therapy Helps a Teenager Grow Up“ in a discussion with host/interviewer Chris Burritt, D.O. Following their conversation, you will have the opportunity to ask questions by on-line chat.

Dr. Chastka, why did you choose to present this case?

Dr. Chastka: “Many young people have difficulty with the transition from adolescence to early adulthood. Their struggle to become independent while handling the change this puts on parental relationships has been exacerbated by the ongoing pandemic. This is a story of one young man’s attempt to overcome his fears and develop into a functioning adult.”

What treatment approach did you use with this patient?

Dr. Chastka: “Walter grew up stubbornly saying “no” to everything in his life. His increasing negativity and withdrawal from life interfered with his ability to function and he became immobilized.”

“Walter’s therapy focused on helping him change the conflicted relationships he had with both his parents. Our sessions were geared to help him be clear about and tolerate the strong underlying emotions that emerged when he was able to examine these relationships more clearly. Accordingly, he was able to gain an understanding about himself and his actions and begin to dig himself out of the hole he’d dug himself into.”

“My relationship with Walter was colored by his need to view me as a father figure— something he longed for that was missing in his life. I used this to gently and steadily guide him out of his sad and troubled youth to become a functioning adult.”

What do you hope people will learn from your presentation?

Dr. Chastka: “This case illustrates that therapy can be effective in helping young people mature and grow up. It can assist them in facing their anxieties head on and mastering them. Therapy also helped Walter fill the void of a most important person missing in his life: his father.”

The webinar will be facilitated by Zoom and will last approximately one hour. Attendance is free. Registration is required.
