The ACO’s Case Presentation Series, A Different Kind of Psychiatry, continues with a free webinar on Saturday, April 25, 2026, from 11:00AM to 12:00PM (ET). Susan Marcel, D.O. will present “Pets: A Life-Saving Connection” in a discussion with interviewer/host Dee Apple, Ph.D.

Why did you choose to present this case?

Dr. Marcel: I chose to present my patient, Ann, because I was very moved by her relationship with her pet cat and the emotional support and love between them. Ann suffered with depression and anxiety since her teen years and she courageously rebuilt her life one step at a time, with her sweet cat by her side. Her story and treatment made me curious about the effect pets have on us.

What treatment approach did you use?

    Dr. Marcel:
Too often, young people are placed on medication for depression and anxiety without really understanding the deeper layers of their natures and characters and how they function. What Ann needed most was someone to listen to her, hear her, and see her. She knew I took her seriously and we built up a trust over 14 years. Her struggles and journey were difficult and yet her emotional health was evident every time we met. She often talked about her cat in a sweet way as she finished school, began working and developed her social relationships.

What do you hope people will learn from your presentation?

    Dr. Marcel
: I hope people will learn about the emotional contact and benefits possible between people and their pets. There is a difference between the words „connection“ and „contact.“ We often use the word, “connection” which means „joining together.“ Emotional contact means „with touch“ which is more than simply joining together.

Ann had a genuine and touching relationship with her cat and with me, which we will explore during the webinar. As an added treat, we will also view a touching video Ann made expressing the positive affect her cat had on her life.

During this presentation, you will have the opportunity to submit questions privately using the Q and A function on Zoom. Questions will be addressed during the Q and A portion of the webinar. As an attendee you will not be seen or heard on screen, and you can choose to submit a question anonymously.
